Pennsic 2009 Class Schedule
I'm very excited about this upcoming Pennsic. This year I wanted to add on some classes that focused more on getting people ready to perform with each other (musicians and dancers).

Friday July 31st
Baby Beginner Doumbek
(at Touch the Earth, 3pm to 4pm)
In this workshop, you will learn the proper hand/finger techniques to produce clean beautiful sounds from your doumbek. You will learn how to play several traditional Middle Eastern rhythms as well as how to switch between them. This workshop is perfect for beginners or experienced drummers who want to brush up or clean up their technique. This workshop is also fantastic for dancers who want to educate themselves about the basic rhythms.

Saturday August 1st
Begintermediate Doumbek
(at Touch the Earth, 3pm to 4pm)
You know a bunch of rhythms...now what? Let's get "Beyond Baladi". You will learn practical rhythm combinations useful for playing songs and making your drum circle more fun. You will also learn how to add fills and embellishments to make your playing more interesting. This workshop is perfect for anyone who already knows the basic hits and rhythms.

Musicians and Dancers: Performing Together
(at ME Dance Tent 5pm to 6:30pm)
I'm co-teaching this class with the fabulous dancer Samira! In this class, musicians and dancers will learn standard show formats and how to work together. Musicians willl play for the dancers in the class. This is an excellent opportunity to get to try out dancing to live music (and playing for dancers) without it being a formal show. New or experienced, this class is for you.

Sunday August 2nd
Baby Beginner Riq (Middle-Eastern Tambourine)
(at Marrakesh, 12pm to 1pm)
Are you riq-curious? The riq is an amazingly versatile (and highly portable instrument). A great second instrument after doumbek. Held in a shop that has plenty of riqs to borrow for class.

Doumbek Workout
(at Touch the Earth, 3pm to 4pm)
You're going to break a sweat! We're going to do lots and lots of running. Be prepared to play lots of malfuf :)

Monday August 3rd
Drumming in a Group
(at Touch the Earth, 3pm to 4pm)
It's great to play with friends. In this class, I'll give tips and tricks for small performing drumming groups. How to play solos and work together. If you got them, bring your OTHER instruments such as Riqs, Frame Drums, Bass Doumbeks, etc.
